According to sources familiar with the matter, artificial intelligence startup Perplexity has signed a $750 million agreement with Microsoft to utilize its Azure cloud services. The three-year deal is expected to grant the NVIDIA-backed Perplexity access to run a suite of AI models through Microsoft's Foundry program, including systems from OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI. A spokesperson for Perplexity confirmed that the company is collaborating with Microsoft "to gain access to cutting-edge models from X, OpenAI, and Anthropic." The spokesperson informed Bloomberg that, as part of the arrangement with Microsoft, Perplexity has not shifted its spending away from its primary cloud provider, Amazon Web Services (AWS). The representative further clarified that the transaction with Microsoft does not involve transferring expenditures currently allocated to Amazon Web Services. Last year, Amazon initiated legal proceedings against Perplexity concerning its "agent" shopping feature, which employs automation to place orders for users; Amazon alleged that Perplexity covertly accessed Amazon customer accounts and disguised automated activity as human browsing.
