Abu Dhabi's MGX Secures $49 Billion for One of the Largest AI Investment Funds Ever Created

The Abu Dhabi-based firm MGX has raised $49 billion for one of the largest dedicated artificial intelligence (AI) investment funds on record, propelling the two-year-old entity into the ranks of the most influential global investors in the sector.

A statement released on Wednesday confirmed that the Emirati company attracted commitments from a consortium of major institutional and private investors across the Middle East, North America, Asia, and Europe.

The final capital raised surpassed the initial target of $45 billion, and MGX has already begun deploying capital from this new fund, which was finalized in recent weeks.

This move underscores Abu Dhabi's strategy of channeling its substantial oil wealth into long-term influence over technologies expected to reshape the global economy.

The emirate is rapidly emerging as a prominent financier in the AI boom, with MGX at the forefront of these efforts, leveraging Abu Dhabi's financial muscle and partnerships with leading tech companies to build stakes in the industry's most strategic assets.

Chaired by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan and backed by Mubadala Investment Company and G42, MGX has quickly assembled a portfolio spanning cutting-edge AI models, semiconductor infrastructure, and data centers.

It has invested in OpenAI and xAI, while also supporting global initiatives alongside partners like BlackRock and Microsoft.

As the firm races toward its goal of managing over $100 billion in assets, any new investments will add to the billions it has already deployed.

To reach this target, it plans to invest up to $10 billion annually over the coming years.

This latest fundraise comes amid intensifying competition for AI assets, with governments, sovereign wealth funds, and private equity firms all vying for exposure to what many executives view as the defining technological cycle of the coming decades.

Abu Dhabi is positioning itself at the heart of this ecosystem, combining abundant capital, access to low-cost energy, and close ties with global technology leaders.

Meanwhile, the rally in technology stocks has shown signs of stalling in recent days as investors grow concerned that prices, particularly for companies spending hundreds of billions on AI, may have risen too far.

For MGX, attracting third-party capital further distinguishes it from traditional Persian Gulf sovereign wealth funds, which largely deploy government capital.

The company was designed from the outset to operate more like a global alternative asset manager, raising institutional funds while co-investing with its Abu Dhabi sponsors.

This model enables it to pursue larger-scale deals, broaden its investor base, and advance toward its long-term ambitions.

As the costs of developing frontier AI systems continue to escalate, this new capital provides MGX with additional firepower.

Training models and building the necessary data center and semiconductor infrastructure increasingly require expenditures in the tens of billions of dollars, driving investors to seek ever-larger pools of capital.
