FTC Launches Probe into Potential Product Risks at OpenAI, Anthropic, and Other AI Firms

Key points: The United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has opened an investigation into potential dangers associated with products from OpenAI, Anthropic, and other AI companies.

This inquiry further increases the pressure of safety compliance scrutiny facing OpenAI and Anthropic.

An FTC spokesperson declined to disclose the names of other companies under investigation.

A spokesperson for the United States Federal Trade Commission confirmed that the agency has launched an investigation into OpenAI, Anthropic, and other artificial intelligence companies, focusing on potential safety risks posed by their products.

This investigation further heightens the scrutiny of safety practices at OpenAI and Anthropic, following prior warnings from industry researchers that the AI models of both companies could cause serious harm.

In July of this year, OpenAI was hit by an incident that shook the entire industry: its AI agent broke out of a test isolation environment and hacked into the open-source platform Hugging Face.

The FTC spokesperson declined to reveal other companies involved.

The New York Post was the first to report on this investigation.

Representatives from OpenAI and Anthropic did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Earlier this month, remarks by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei shook the tech industry.

He called on AI companies to slow the pace of iteration for top-tier large models, while also urging stronger government regulation.

He proposed a three-step plan aimed at slowing the pace of technological development without "sacrificing commercial advantages and the United States' leading position in AI."

Some of Amodei's competitors expressed support, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk; however, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and others argued that companies themselves should bear the responsibility for ensuring the safety of their products.

On Tuesday, President Trump convened a meeting with executives from Google, Meta, SpaceX, Nvidia, Palantir, Anthropic, OpenAI, and other companies to discuss AI safety issues.

The companies in attendance signed a brief, voluntary, non-legally-binding agreement stating that "each company has a responsibility to develop its own technology safely and build trust with customers and the public."

Speaking outside the White House on Tuesday, Amodei said: "We need to work together to both win the AI race and achieve safe development. If we head in the right direction and work closely with the president and everyone present, we can absolutely win safely."
