OpenAI Pledges $100 Million in Discounted Services to Counter Its Own Forthcoming 'Terrifying' AI Threats

OpenAI has unveiled plans to allocate $100 million in subsidized credits over the next six months to help organizations defend against AI-driven cyberattacks, including potential "zero-day" threats from its upcoming Astra model. This decision follows the disclosure that Astra can independently detect previously unknown software vulnerabilities and transform them into functioning attack tools.

A zero-day vulnerability refers to a security gap that software developers haven't yet patched, leaving systems exposed to exploitation by attackers who act before a fix is deployed. Rather than establishing a grant fund, OpenAI will provide the $100 million as discounted access to its "Daybreak" security platform, which was launched earlier this year as the company's cybersecurity product. Access includes additional support such as training and technical assistance.

Daybreak offers two tiers: a Blue version running standard models for routine defense operations, and a Red version that grants approved institutions access to specialized cybersecurity models for handling more sensitive tasks. According to an official blog post, roughly 2,000 organizations are already using the platform. Priority recipients in this initiative include water and wastewater utilities, power grid operators, state and local governments, community and regional banks, nonprofit organizations, and maintainers of open-source projects.

Notably absent from the announcement are cryptocurrency exchanges, custodial services, or blockchain protocols. However, open-source blockchain and encryption software falls squarely within the "open-source maintainers" category. Projects such as Bitcoin Core, Ethereum clients, and codebases underpinning DeFi protocols are largely maintained by small teams or unpaid volunteers, who safeguard code representing billions of dollars in assets.

The urgency stems from OpenAI's disclosure this Monday that Astra can autonomously identify unknown software flaws and generate functional exploit code without requiring step-by-step human guidance. This indicates AI has crossed a critical threshold, as such capabilities were previously concentrated among professional hacking groups. Qualified organizations can apply through the Daybreak website, and OpenAI has stated the service will extend to partner countries in the coming weeks.

This commitment arrives during a turbulent period for crypto applications and network technology. In August, the open-source software BTCPay Server, a popular Bitcoin payment tool for merchants, experienced a vulnerability that exposed credentials controlling lightning units, allowing attackers to siphon funds before a patch was issued. Core Lightning, a primary client for the Lightning Network used in low-cost micro Bitcoin transactions, also advised operators last week to disconnect machines after a series of AI-generated security reports uncovered multiple genuine flaws.

Additionally, Coldcard, a hardware wallet for offline Bitcoin storage, released new firmware following a $114 million theft, with the company noting that frontier AI models helped capture other unrelated vulnerabilities. These incidents have galvanized more than thirty companies, including industry heavyweights like Coinbase, Block, BitGo, Blockstream, and ARK Invest, to issue a joint open letter to AI labs requesting early access to the most powerful models for defensive purposes. The companies argue that while AI labs vet recipients of their strongest models, attackers have already obtained these models through various channels, leaving those who maintain Bitcoin code at a disadvantage compared to the tools available to adversaries.
