Since the start of September, a fresh wave of headquarters projects has signed on to establish operations in Suzhou, spanning sectors like robotics, photonics, new materials, high-end power equipment, and car rental and mobility services. This development is set to further bolster Suzhou's overall economic strength and comprehensive development capabilities.

On September 16, the intelligent living robot industry and headquarters base project from JianDanYouWei (UWANT) was officially located in Suzhou. The following day, September 15, the optical interconnect headquarters project for Electric Connector Technology was signed in Suzhou High-tech Zone. September 11 saw the car rental platform headquarters project for CAR Inc. land in the Suzhou Industrial Park. Additionally, on September 9, the China headquarters for Italy's Volpiano Group was inked for the Suzhou High-tech Zone, and on September 1, the high-performance masterbatch and automotive modified materials headquarters project from Hefu New Materials was signed for the Zhangjiagang Bonded Area. Just recently, the East China regional headquarters for Clou Electronics was also placed in Dianshanhu Town, Kunshan.

Where do these companies originate from?

On one hand, several come from within Suzhou itself, a direct result of the city's persistent efforts in nurturing local industries over the years. For instance, Zhangjiagang Hefu New Materials Technology Co., Ltd., a talent-driven enterprise independently introduced and cultivated by Zhangjiagang, focuses on the R&D, production, and sale of high-performance masterbatches and automotive modified materials. This project will see an investment of 310 million yuan to build its headquarters in Zhangjiagang. Similarly, Suzhou JianDanYouWei Technology Co., Ltd., born and raised in Suzhou, has evolved from a startup team into a benchmark enterprise in the intelligent cleaning sector in just over five years since its founding in January 2021. Its smart cleaning brand, UWANT, has shown strong growth momentum and now leads in niche areas like mite removers, push-in floor washers, and auto dust-collecting vacuum cleaners. This year, the company anticipates revenues of 5.5 to 6 billion yuan with tax contributions around 270 million yuan. Looking ahead, JianDanYouWei has cast a vote of confidence in Suzhou with a substantial 5.1 billion yuan investment to build its intelligent living robot industry and headquarters base in Wujiang District, which will include a manufacturing hub, core R&D center, and headquarters building.

On the other hand, from an external introduction perspective, beyond local enterprises expanding their capacity, Suzhou is also actively attracting top-tier headquarters resources from across the nation and the globe. Among the recently signed projects, Electric Connector Technology Co., Ltd., a listed benchmark enterprise in the high-speed interconnect sector based in Shenzhen, has already established a subsidiary in Suzhou and is now setting up its optical interconnect headquarters project in the Suzhou High-tech Zone. Likewise, Clou Electronics Technology Co., Ltd., also hailing from Shenzhen, has chosen Dianshanhu Town in Kunshan for its East China regional headquarters, with a 260 million yuan investment focused on the R&D, manufacturing, and global export of gas-insulated transformers, intelligent ring main units, and low-voltage high-end power equipment. The CAR Inc. group, not a locally nurtured company but a leading domestic car rental service brand, will set up its group headquarters platform in the Suzhou Industrial Park. This platform will handle some of the group's future capitalization and head office functions, gradually integrating regional vehicle procurement, R&D, maintenance, and trading activities.

Suzhou is a hub for foreign investment, and in recent years, an increasing number of multinational corporations have chosen to establish their China headquarters here. The signing of the China headquarters for Italy's Volpiano Group on September 9 adds another feather to Suzhou's cap as a premier destination for foreign-owned headquarters. Volpiano Group is a global leader in the design and production of intelligent and sustainable building materials and equipment. Its subsidiary, IMEG, has been rooted in the Suzhou High-tech Zone for years. With this agreement, IMEG Suzhou will be upgraded to serve as the China headquarters for the Volpiano Group. Leveraging this new platform, the company plans to optimize its strategic layout, establish an R&D center, and bring in the group's global premium brands and advanced production lines. This will involve continuous investment increases, capacity expansion, and product iterations to further enhance its comprehensive operational capabilities in China and across the Asia-Pacific region.

Why are companies opting to base their headquarters in Suzhou, and what impact will this headquarters economy have?

Each step a company takes—from establishing roots to expanding and then upgrading to a headquarters—reflects its trust in Suzhou. This confidence is built on years of collaborative progress. Suzhou's ever-improving industrial clusters serve as the bedrock, and its consistently optimized business environment provides the fertile ground that wins companies' firm decisions to locate their headquarters here. In the intelligent cleaning sector, where JianDanYouWei operates, Suzhou is a powerhouse, producing 60% to 70% of the world's vacuum cleaners as a major global base for floor-cleaning home appliances. This cluster effect allows companies to source core components locally, dramatically shortening procurement cycles and reducing logistics costs, enabling "nearby collaboration and rapid iteration."

The optical interconnect headquarters project from Electric Connector Technology is focused on integrated optoelectronic connection solutions and the industrialization of core optical communication components like V-groove substrates. Its decision to locate in the Suzhou High-tech Zone was driven by the deep synergy with the area's industrial positioning. As a preferred location for the photonics sector, the Suzhou High-tech Zone has already attracted over 350 photonics-related enterprises, with the total industry output value surpassing 85 billion yuan. Building on its comprehensive industrial system and business climate, Suzhou's headquarters economy is accelerating its rise. The ripple effects, in turn, drive efficient coordination across the industrial chain, effectively filling gaps, strengthening links, and extending the chain. This fosters a positive development loop of "headquarters leading—chain optimization—ecosystem closure." For example, the Clou Electronics East China regional headquarters in Dianshanhu Town, Kunshan, will benefit the local high-end power equipment cluster and precisely reinforce a critical link in the town's high-end power transmission and distribution core component supply chain.

Furthermore, the headquarters economy has a powerful talent aggregation effect. It continuously draws in corporate management and technical professionals, bringing advanced technology concepts and mature management models to the city while creating a wealth of high-quality job opportunities. This activates the city's industrial, innovative, and human resource vitality.

The momentum of the headquarters economy is not just visible in new project signings but also in the steady progress of projects already under construction.

Recently, several headquarters projects in Suzhou have hit new milestones. The China headquarters projects for Chongde Ultrasonic and Weiss Fugui are currently undergoing interior decoration and equipment installation, with trial production expected to begin by the end of October. Meanwhile, Suzhou Chuangteng Precision Machinery Manufacturing Co., Ltd.'s precision machinery parts industrialization and headquarters base project has completed its main structure topping-out, with full completion targeted for the end of December. Additionally, on September 9, the Suzhou headquarters base project for Zhilv Technology successfully passed its completion acceptance check.

Looking ahead, Suzhou will continue to enhance its business environment, intensify efforts to attract and cultivate enterprises, and drive its headquarters economy to new heights.
