Small Town, Big Dreams: Young Talent Flocks to Changfeng's Only "Billion-Dollar Town"

The vitality of China's economic growth stems not only from powerhouse provinces but also from dynamic small towns. As we approach 2026, we explore these towns to uncover the secrets behind their thriving economies and livable environments. Among them, Changfeng County's Xiatang Town stands out as a prime example.

The most telling indicator of a city's vibrancy is the flow of people. Zhao Changshun, a veteran electrical engineer in his 40s, made a pivotal decision in June 2022—to relocate his family from Henan to Xiatang Town in Changfeng County, bringing along over 20 utility patents. His move coincided with the industrial opportunities created by Byd Company Limited's establishment in Xiatang.

Two years after Byd Company Limited's arrival, local entrepreneur Li Yongjin, 33, opened a fruit shop near the company's employee dormitories. Taking over his mother's beverage business, he found new opportunities catering to young factory workers. "The streets used to be filled with elderly and children," Li recalls. "Now, young faces dominate the crowd."

Xiatang Town, a historic settlement in central Changfeng County, has transformed dramatically. Once known primarily for its traditional baked cakes, the town achieved 111.4 billion yuan in industrial output in 2024, becoming Anhui Province's first "billion-dollar industrial town." The arrival of Byd Company Limited's super factory in 2021 marked the beginning of this transformation, bringing new life to the agricultural community.

Zhao Changshun's journey exemplifies this change. In 2022, the electrical engineer chose Xiatang over lucrative offers from Tianjin, drawn by the town's emerging new energy sector. "What impressed me most was the young R&D team discussing cutting-edge technologies," Zhao says. Despite initial challenges—including cracked roads and limited amenities—he witnessed rapid urbanization, with new businesses sprouting within months.

At Shuangjie Electric, Zhao led breakthroughs in high-capacity transformer technology, securing major contracts including a time-sensitive Beijing infrastructure project. His team, 80% under 35, reflects Xiatang's youthful workforce. "We have robust mentorship programs," Zhao notes, though acknowledging some turnover among younger employees.

Meanwhile, Li Yongjin's fruit business has evolved with the town's demographics. Transitioning from traditional beverage wholesale, he now caters to young factory workers with premium imports like Thai durians and Chilean cherries, leveraging TikTok livestreams to drive sales. "Daily orders reach 300, with revenue hitting 10,000 yuan," Li shares.

The town's commercial landscape has expanded dramatically, with four new business streets and multiple shopping centers under construction. "Soon, young couples won't need to go downtown for movies," Li remarks, highlighting the ripple effects of Byd Company Limited's presence, which attracted suppliers like Giti Tire and CALB.

Both Zhao and Li represent Xiatang's dual transformation—attracting outside talent while empowering locals. As Zhao pursues his master's degree and Li plans shop expansions, their stories underscore how strategic industries can revitalize small towns, creating ecosystems where professionals and entrepreneurs thrive together.
