Standard Chartered Bank (SCBFF.US) has positioned itself as a first-mover in Hong Kong's institutional digital asset settlement landscape, partnering with Anchorpoint Financial to launch a regulated stablecoin in the region. An email announcement released on Monday revealed that Standard Chartered will prioritize assisting eligible institutional clients and partners in integrating the HKD stablecoin issued by Anchorpoint Financial, in which it holds a majority stake, into existing systems.

The bank plans to introduce multiple new commercial applications based on this HKD stablecoin over the coming month, spanning market fund subscriptions, settlement processing with asset management firms, intra-group settlements via its global network, and cross-border payment scenarios. Anchorpoint Financial began limited promotion of the HKD stablecoin on August 12, just four months after securing one of the first two stablecoin issuer licenses granted in Hong Kong.

According to industry insights, the initial rollout phase will concentrate on institutional payment and settlement operations, with additional use cases and cross-border functionalities to be gradually added over time. On the competitive front, HSBC Holdings PLC (HSBC.US), which obtained one of the initial issuance permits, is preparing to launch its own stablecoin in the second half of 2026, potentially distributing it through a payment platform that serves 3.3 million users.

Meanwhile, Payward, the parent company of Kraken, has expanded its stablecoin footprint in Hong Kong through a $600 million acquisition agreement with Reap Technologies. The capital battle between traditional financial giants and crypto-native enterprises is reshaping the landscape of compliant stablecoins in Hong Kong's evolving ecosystem.
