Fire Breaks Out During Decommissioning of California Offshore Gas Platform

On Monday, emergency responders, led by the U.S. Coast Guard, addressed a fire on a decommissioned natural gas platform off the coast of Santa Barbara, California.

The fire ignited at approximately 6:30 a.m. while crew members were conducting decommissioning operations on the Habitat platform.

The Habitat platform is a non-producing structure located about eight miles southwest of Santa Barbara.

Responders and platform personnel reported that the fire was extinguished by 11:40 a.m.

There are currently no indications of any oil spill from the platform into the ocean, and no impact on wildlife or the public has been reported.

Agencies involved in the response included the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach, the Channel Islands Station, and multiple county and city fire departments from Ventura and Santa Barbara, along with other relevant safety and environmental agencies.
