Every morning, the special optical fiber laboratory at Wuhan FiberHome Communications begins its busy day. In front of the operating table, an engineer picks up a hollow-core fiber with a diameter of only 0.4 millimeters. This fiber is almost invisible to the naked eye, but when a microscope magnifies it thousands of times, a reality-defying image emerges: the interior of this thin strand is actually hollow. On the wall of this hollow tube, 20 even thinner glass cylinder structures are precisely embedded, creating a "maglev" high-speed track for light. This is the key to next-generation optical communication — hollow-core fiber, which concentrates light to race smoothly through the center of a near-vacuum channel, dramatically increasing transmission speed.
The evolution of a single optical fiber reflects the collective leap of Wuhan's "Five Valleys." From a single beam of light to a sky full of stars, today the Optics Valley, Vehicle Valley, Star Valley, Cyber Valley, and Pharma Valley are all racing toward the same goal in their own ways: abundance. The Optics Valley is the main engine of Wuhan's innovation rise. In May of this year, Yangtze Memory Technologies launched its listing process, Changjin Photonics landed on the STAR Market, and the number of listed companies in the Optics Valley increased to 72, accounting for about one-third of Hubei Province, shouldering the heavy responsibility of high-quality development across the Jingchu region.
The Vehicle Valley is rewriting the definition of "automobile." At the Voyah smart factory, a new vehicle rolls off the line every 63 seconds; test cars equipped with the latest generation L3 autonomous driving system have already been conducting regular road tests on Wuhan's Third Ring Road, with cumulative test mileage exceeding 700,000 kilometers. "L3 autonomous driving can already begin to free the driver's hands," said a relevant person in charge at Voyah, noting that vehicle deliveries in the first half of the year grew significantly year-on-year.
In the sky above the Star Valley, the "Kuaizhou" rocket has completed flight after flight, with the scale of satellites placed into orbit ranking among the top of solid rockets of the same type worldwide. Within the 68.8-square-kilometer industrial base, the four major sectors of "satellites, rockets, cloud, and materials" are fully in place, with an annual production capacity of 240 small satellites and 50 rockets. The chained industrial ecosystem of the "Star Valley" is accelerating its formation. The Star Valley is a key pole in China's commercial aerospace landscape.
The computing cluster of the Cyber Valley is accelerating its expansion. The core area of the National Cyber Security Base has gathered more than 400 enterprises, and the artificial intelligence output value of the surrounding areas of the Cyber Valley has exceeded 10 billion yuan. The Zhongjin Digital Valley Wuhan Big Data Center has over 2,000P of installed computing power, and once fully completed, its full-load computing power is expected to reach 105,000P. It carries the new industrial foundation of cybersecurity and the digital economy, promoting deep integration of the digital intelligence economy and the security industry. The Cyber Valley is China's first national-level cybersecurity industry cluster.
Currently, Wuhan is optimizing its citywide spatial layout, achieving complementary resources and linked advantages among districts, and accelerating the construction of a "China Pharma Valley" with international competitiveness. Walking into the exhibition hall of Wuhan Healthgen Biotechnology, a technician picks up a bottle of transparent injection: "This is the world's first plant-derived recombinant human serum albumin that replaces plasma extraction." From a single rice plant to a bottle of medicine, Healthgen took twenty years. Last July, OsrHSA was approved for market launch by the National Medical Products Administration, becoming the world's first Class 1 innovative drug for "rice-based blood production." The Pharma Valley is building a leading-scale life and health industry cluster.
The lasers and chips of the Optics Valley enter the smart cars of the Vehicle Valley, giving them the ability to "perceive" and "decide"; the security solutions of the Cyber Valley build defenses for the massive data links of the Vehicle Valley; the remote sensing data of the Star Valley is transmitted back to the computing center of the Optics Valley, feeding back into urban governance. The boundaries between the "Five Valleys" are blurring, replaced by a densely woven network of integrated innovation.
At present, Wuhan has established a "chain chief" system for the "Five Valleys" advantageous industrial clusters, striving to have the Optics Valley advantageous industrial cluster exceed 900 billion yuan by 2026, the Vehicle Valley advantageous industrial cluster reach 450 billion yuan, the Cyber Valley advantageous industrial cluster exceed 30 billion yuan, the Star Valley advantageous industrial cluster reach 40 billion yuan, and the Pharma Valley advantageous industrial cluster reach 720 billion yuan.
"Valley" means the clustered development of a city's high-end industries. Today, the Optics Valley is building a global benchmark for science and innovation, the Vehicle Valley is reshaping the advantages of the automobile industry, the Star Valley is opening up new frontiers in the space economy, the Cyber Valley is building a strong digital security barrier, and the Pharma Valley is empowering the upgrading of life and health. The linked development of the "Five Valleys" is stretching Wuhan's growth line toward a broader picture and higher coordinates.
Wuhan's "abundance across Five Valleys" is a sample of a central Chinese city exploring new quality productive forces, and also a central strategic pivot in the national layout for scientific and technological self-reliance. In the first half of this year, Wuhan's GDP was 1.12 trillion yuan, with a year-on-year growth rate of 5.7%, showing strong development momentum. Abundance across the Five Valleys means abundance in industry and advancement in technology. With the "Five Valleys" as the chessboard and innovation as the engine, Wuhan is accelerating its construction as an important strategic pivot for the rise of the central region — this is the responsibility of a great city.
