Jiangsu's Changzhou Implements Smart Charging Systems to Facilitate Electric Vehicle Owners' Travel

During the Spring Festival holiday, the return of new energy vehicle owners to their hometowns and an increase in self-driving trips have led to a surge in home charging demand, putting residential charging facilities under peak load pressure. In Jiangsu, a new type of smart and orderly charging pilot community is playing a key role, using intelligent scheduling to effectively ease charging pressure and ensure convenient power usage for vehicle owners. At the parking lot of Juxin Jiayuan residential community in Changzhou, Jiangsu, charging piles behind each parking space have been connected to a smart orderly charging system. Faced with the holiday charging peak, the system utilizes IoT, big data, and artificial intelligence technologies to dynamically adjust charging power and guide vehicles to charge during periods of lower grid load and cheaper electricity rates, achieving "peak shaving and valley filling." Vehicle owners only need to set their charging requirements via their mobile phones, and the system automatically optimizes the plan, ensuring travel needs are met while saving charging costs and reducing grid burden. Li Haitao, a resident of Juxin Jiayuan community, said, "During the holiday, there are noticeably more people charging in the community. I planned a self-driving trip and used my phone to set a full charge by 9 a.m. the next day. The system automatically scheduled charging for late at night, costing only 21.9 yuan for 30 kWh—over 6 yuan cheaper than daytime charging. It's both convenient and cost-effective." Feng Chen, operations and maintenance supervisor of State Grid Changzhou Electric Vehicle Service Co., Ltd., added, "During the Spring Festival, especially when people return to their hometowns, residential charging loads rise sharply, which can easily increase grid pressure. The smart orderly charging system can actively adjust charging times and power, effectively smoothing peak loads. It not only helps vehicle owners save money by using off-peak electricity but also enhances grid regulation capabilities and improves power supply reliability." As one of the first pilot cities in China for large-scale vehicle-grid interaction applications, Changzhou has prioritized the construction of 15 smart orderly charging pilot projects in residential communities with significant grid distribution pressure. The total adjustable load has now reached 2,870 kilowatts, providing technical support for handling charging peaks during holidays and other high-demand scenarios.
