U.S. Steel announced on Thursday that it has begun restarting one of the two blast furnaces at its Granite City plant in Illinois, driven by customer demand.

CEO David Burritt stated, "After months of careful analysis of customer demand, we have decided to restart the furnace." The furnace had been temporarily idled by U.S. Steel in 2023. The company was acquired earlier this year by Japan's Nippon Steel.

Burritt added, "We are confident in our ability to operate the plant safely and profitably to meet 2026 demand."

A U.S. Steel spokesperson said the company expects to add approximately 400 employees at the Granite City facility to operate the blast furnace, bringing total staffing to about 1,200 workers.
