Trump's Portfolio Shift: Stoking Global Volatility While Ramping Up Traditional Stock and Bond Purchases

Former President Donald Trump's latest financial disclosures reveal his portfolio of traditional stocks and bonds has quadrupled. After cashing out $14 billion from high-risk ventures, his team swiftly moved the profits into safer havens, positioning his business empire to harvest a new round of wealth through strategic allocations in traditional assets amid political turbulence.

According to recent disclosures from the Office of Government Ethics, Trump generated over $14 billion in revenue last year from crypto projects associated with his family, including World Liberty Financial and the Trump-branded meme coin.

However, a Reuters in-depth analysis indicates these highly volatile gains were not kept on-chain. Instead, they were rapidly converted into "safe assets" by his professional asset managers. The data shows that by the end of 2025, the valuation of Trump's traditional stock and bond portfolio had surged to between $703 million and $2.6 billion. This marks a more-than-quadruple increase from the $225 million to $608 million range at the end of 2024.

This asset allocation move has prompted market experts to question his true stance. Timothy Massad, Director of the Harvard Kennedy School's Digital Assets Policy Project and former CFTC Chairman, stated bluntly: "In his speeches, Trump portrays digital assets as the financial frontier, but his personal financial statements reveal a classic short-term arbitrage logic—making quick money in the crypto market through his personal brand, then swiftly retreating to the safe harbor of traditional assets."

Ironically, while Trump and his sons, Eric and Donald Jr., frequently endorse crypto projects, retail investors in these related ventures have suffered significant losses. Statistics show that as of April this year, cumulative losses for retail investors participating in the four major crypto projects Trump endorsed had reached $2.3 billion.

If the asset allocation reflects Trump's pursuit of stability for his personal wealth, his erratic foreign policy moves have once again subjected global investors to "Trump volatility."

On July 8, at the NATO summit, Trump abruptly announced the termination of the "U.S.-Iran interim peace agreement," which had been in effect for less than a month, bringing the prospect of war back to the forefront. This move forced numerous institutions betting on a de-escalation in the Middle East to hastily cut their losses.

Marko Papic, Chief Investment Strategist at BCA Research, admitted that he had just advised clients to short U.S. stocks and shift to European and Japanese markets before being "hit hard" by Trump's declaration, forcing him to exit positions at a loss within a single day.

In response to external criticism about the inconsistency between his words and actions, a spokesperson for the Trump Organization stated that the financial reports demonstrate the company's strong liquidity and "conservative balance sheet." The White House responded that Trump's assets are managed in "discretionary accounts" by independent third-party financial institutions.

This strategy has undoubtedly been successful. Currently, the crypto tokens Trump personally holds are subject to a long-term lock-up period due to his "founding partner" status. However, the $14 billion already cashed out from project operations provides him with ample ammunition to deploy in traditional markets.
