US President Donald Trump is set to host a dinner with several business leaders on the eve of concluding his visit to Tokyo, where Japan's investment achievements in the US will be announced. Attendees include Salesforce.com (CRM.US) CEO Marc Benioff, Toshiba CEO Taro Shimada, and Rakuten (RKUNY.US) founder Hiroshi Mikitani. The event will take place at the residence of US Ambassador to Japan George Glass, with other notable guests such as OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman, Honda Motor (HMC.US) President Toshihiro Mibe, and Anduril Industries founder Palmer Luckey.

The dinner coincides with the White House announcing a new round of US economic investment commitments. Under a trade framework agreed earlier this year, Trump lowered and set tariff ceilings on Japanese goods in exchange for Japan pledging $550 billion in funding for US projects. Earlier on Tuesday, some attendees joined US Commerce Secretary Lutnick in unveiling a series of potential new projects.

US and Japanese leaders highlighted manufacturing and energy sector collaborations, with expected investments ranging from $350 million to as much as $100 billion. Lutnick remarked, "It’s rare to have so many industry leaders gathered in one place."

The initiatives aim to clarify differing interpretations of the investment terms in the trade deal. Trump previously described the $550 billion as funds his administration could "directly allocate," with 90% of returns benefiting the US. Japan, however, clarified that the commitment includes investments, loans, and guarantees, primarily supporting Japanese businesses in the US.

During earlier talks between Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Japan presented a map detailing investments announced during Trump’s second term. These include Nippon Steel’s acquisition of US Steel, Toyota Motor (TM.US) and Panasonic’s joint battery plant, and Toto Ltd.’s (TOTDY.US) $220 million bathroom products facility in Georgia.
