South Korean Stocks Rebound Sharply on Wednesday as Chip Rally Halts Four-Day Losing Streak

South Korea's stock market staged a solid recovery on Wednesday, with the KOSPI index closing significantly higher and successfully snapping a four-session losing streak. According to the latest official data from the Korea Exchange (KRX), the KOSPI opened slightly lower at 6,611.24 points, down 0.2%, before climbing steadily throughout the session to reach a high of 6,714.75 points. By the afternoon close, the KOSPI had settled at 6,711.45 points, up 84.19 points, or 1.27%, from the previous trading day.

The semiconductor sector emerged as the day's market leader. Following several days of heavy selling, chip giants such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix attracted robust technical buying support, providing a substantial lift to the broader index and decisively ending its four-day decline.

Macro Uncertainty Persists as Investor Sentiment Remains Wary

Despite today's sharp market gain, analysts noted that overall risk appetite remains clearly suppressed, with investor sentiment staying cautious. Persistently high bond yields both globally and in South Korea are exerting ongoing opportunity cost pressure on equity valuations. A source familiar with the matter said on Wednesday that the South Korean union at chipmaker SK Hynix has ratified a preliminary wage deal with management. This comes after weeks of uncertainty caused by employees rejecting a previous agreement.

Market expectations are widely pointing to the U.S. Federal Reserve announcing an interest rate hike at its meeting on Wednesday (local time), with a strong possibility of at least one additional increase before the end of March. This outlook has completely dismantled the previously fragile consensus that rates would remain unchanged.

Overall, while the oversold bounce in chip stocks has provided timely support to halt the KOSPI's decline, whether the market can establish a sustained recovery momentum remains uncertain. Against the backdrop of a global central bank tightening cycle that has yet to peak and rising rate hike expectations, investors are closely watching tonight's Fed policy decision and its subsequent forward guidance. Meanwhile, a meeting originally scheduled for September 17 to brief South Korea's parliament on the first project under its $350 billion U.S. investment plan has been postponed. The industry ministry has requested delays from two parliamentary committees for this closed-door briefing on the initial U.S. investment project and its details. This postponement could delay the signing of related Korea-U.S. agreements and the project's official announcement, which was originally set for as early as September 18. Reports indicate that Seoul and Washington remain at odds over South Korea's participation in the Alaska liquefied natural gas project and the distribution of profits through an overarching investment vehicle. South Korea's foreign ministry stated Wednesday that Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul will visit the United States this week and meet with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday.
