April 22, 2026 - Global biopharmaceutical leader AbbVie has announced a major investment plan to construct a new pharmaceutical manufacturing campus in Durham, North Carolina, with a total investment of $1.4 billion. This represents the company's largest single-site investment to date.

According to the plan, the new campus, spanning 185 acres, will become a primary US production base for AbbVie's injectable drugs, aimed at expanding domestic capacity to meet global demand for critical medicines. The facility will focus on manufacturing treatments for immune system disorders, cancer, and brain and neurological diseases.

AbbVie plans to hire 734 employees for the campus over four years, with roles encompassing engineers, scientists, and manufacturing personnel. The project is expected to break ground in 2026 and be completed by the end of 2028, creating over 2,000 construction jobs during this period. The initial phase of development will include manufacturing facilities, laboratories, warehouses, office space, and employee amenities.

This investment is a significant component of AbbVie's broader strategy to invest approximately $100 billion in US research, development, and manufacturing over the next decade. In the past year alone, the company has committed more than $2.2 billion to manufacturing projects within the United States, continuously strengthening its domestic supply chain and production capabilities.
