Fuel Shortages in Russia Spark Surge in Electric Vehicle Purchases

Reports indicate that as fuel shortages emerge across multiple regions in Russia, leading to long queues at gas stations and soaring prices, an automobile dealership in Moscow is striving to meet the rapidly increasing consumer demand for electric vehicles.

In recent weeks, escalating Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy infrastructure have caused supplies of gasoline and diesel to tighten, forcing most Russian regions to implement supply restrictions. According to media calculations, retail gasoline prices in some parts of Russia have risen to among the highest levels in Europe.

Russia's vast territory, harsh climate, and limited charging network have historically constrained the development of its electric vehicle market. However, the increasingly severe fuel supply issues are now prompting some vehicle owners to switch to electric cars.

Yevgeniy Zabelin, founder of EN Cars, a dealership specializing in Chinese brands, told media on Wednesday that the company is currently selling two to three electric vehicles per day, whereas just a few weeks ago, sales were only at a rate of two to three units per month.

"Demand has increased several times over due to the complicated fuel supply situation," he said, adding that consumer interest is rising for both economy models and premium vehicles.

According to data from the analytical agency Autostat and Russia's Ministry of Industry and Trade, sales of new plug-in hybrid vehicles in Russia for the first five months of this year reached approximately 24,600 units, a 125% increase year-on-year. Sales of pure electric vehicles grew by 19% to 4,460 units.
