Tencent Clarifies Purpose of New 'TenPayGo' App, Denies Plans for Standalone Payment Platform

Is TENCENT developing a standalone payment application? Recently, a new payment app named "TenPayGo" quietly appeared on Apple's App Store, sparking speculation about whether the tech giant plans to launch an independent payment tool. A test by reporters found that while the app is listed, its registration and usage functions are not yet open to the public. In response, TENCENT stated that TenPayGo is an internal trial application designed as a "life convenience assistant" for foreign visitors to China, aiming to provide a one-stop digital life service covering mobile payments among other features. The app is currently in a limited testing phase and is not yet fully open for public experience.

Based on publicly available information, TenPayGo features a relatively simple interface design. After binding a bank card, users can generate a payment QR code for merchants to scan, or actively scan a merchant's QR code to complete a payment, while also supporting the viewing of transaction details. Its payment capabilities rely on the existing infrastructure of WeChat Pay. In terms of application scenarios, the app covers various daily consumption areas such as shopping, dining, transportation, hotels, scenic spots, and medical health. Foreign users can complete payments at offline and online merchants that support WeChat Pay without needing to exchange cash or prepare change.

It is reported that the app will gradually integrate more local transportation and lifestyle service functions in the future. In fact, WeChat Pay had previously opened its foreign card binding service for overseas users. As early as July 2023, TENCENT announced that foreign users could bind international bank cards to WeChat Pay for use in mobile payments across the vast majority of domestic merchant scenarios like dining, transportation, travel, and supermarkets, supporting various methods including scanning codes, being scanned, mini-program payments, password-free deductions, and in-app payments.

Given that the main application already largely covers the payment needs of foreign users, why is TENCENT now separately launching a standalone app? Some analysis suggests it may be an attempt to decouple the payment function from the social platform, creating a more lightweight, focused tool-type application to further lower the barrier to entry for foreign users. However, TENCENT has not provided further comment on this, and the app's final positioning and effectiveness after its official launch remain to be seen.
