Beijing Adjusts Bus Rapid Transit Lane Operating Hours

Starting yesterday, the 28th, the dedicated lanes for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines 2 and 3 have been adjusted. Previously available for bus use 24 hours a day on most routes, they are now designated as bus-only lanes on weekdays from 7:00 to 9:00 and from 17:00 to 19:00. Outside of these hours, the lanes are open to general traffic. This change means all four BRT dedicated lanes in Beijing now operate exclusively during weekday morning and evening peak hours.

According to Li Lei, a captain from the Traffic Order and Facilities Management Unit of the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau, the adjustment for BRT Line 2 affects the bus lane on Chaoyangmen Outer Street and Chaoyang Road. The dedicated lane, located in the outer lane of the central main road from Dongdaqiao Road to Yangzha Roundabout, was originally designed for 24-hour BRT use. It has now been standardized to operate only during weekday peak hours, with no changes to its physical layout.

The adjustment for BRT Line 3 involves the bus lane on Andingmen Outer Street, Anding Road, and Anli Road, stretching from Andingmen Bridge in the south to Shuangying Road in the north. The operating hours for the section between Andingmen Bridge and Kehui Road have been changed from 6:00 to 22:00 to weekday peak hours only. The section from Kehui Road to Shuangying Road, similar to Chaoyang Road, is an outer lane of the central main road and has been converted from a 24-hour BRT lane to a peak-hours-only bus lane.

All related road signs, markings, and automated enforcement equipment have been updated, and general traffic can now use the lanes outside of designated bus hours. Beijing currently has four BRT lines, which were opened between 2005 and 2012. These lanes have been optimized in phases, and the operating hours are now unified across the city.

Following the adjustments, general vehicles are permitted to use the lanes on public holidays and during non-peak hours on weekdays, improving overall road resource efficiency.
