When discussing clinical applications, Xiong acknowledged that AI serves as an excellent supporting tool for physicians, potentially improving diagnostic accuracy. However, he drew a firm distinction: AI cannot replace the practice of medicine itself. Concerns About Over-Reliance on AI

Xiong voiced particular concern about younger doctors who may lack extensive clinical experience but might quickly default to AI recommendations. When a physician's own decision-making capacity is lower than that of the AI system, they will inevitably defer to the machine's judgment. Yet AI systems are fallible and can produce errors. His advice is clear: whether young or senior, doctors should treat AI as a valuable assistant but never delegate their own judgment entirely. Even when AI provides an answer, the physician must personally review the patient and examine the scans carefully, albeit perhaps with less strain.

The Impact on Lifespan and Disease

Regarding potential breakthroughs like gene therapy and their effect on human longevity, Xiong remained measured. Having studied medicine himself but not practiced for years, he declined to make specific predictions. He reasoned that AI will likely create new drugs and technologies that improve clinical diagnosis, inevitably extending average life expectancy, though the exact magnitude remains unknown. Whether humanity might someday achieve immortality is, in his view, beyond anyone's capacity to say with certainty.

Challenges for Healthcare Security and Cost

Addressing whether medical insurance systems might face new challenges from AI-driven changes, Xiong acknowledged uncertainty. While AI could potentially reduce certain medical costs, the broader trend shows that technological advancement typically drives overall healthcare spending upward. This increase in total expenditure does not necessarily equate to reduced efficiency; conversely, it might enable smarter spending that purchases more value for the same money.

On the question of whether AI hospitals or AI doctors might emerge, Xiong was definitive: such scenarios are impossible. AI cannot become a physician, cannot replace doctors, and exists only as an assistant to them. From both a scientific and healthcare management perspective, concepts like AI doctors or AI-led hospitals are fundamentally untenable.
