CS PowerTech Inc., a subsidiary of Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ) and the largest silicon-based photovoltaic solar producer in the United States, has announced the formal commencement of operations for the first phase of its flagship solar cell manufacturing facility located in the River Ridge Commerce Centre in Jeffersonville, Indiana.

This factory is the first in the US specifically designed for the production of heterojunction (HJT) bifacial N-type solar cells. In combination with CS PowerTech's module factory in Mesquite, Texas, this site establishes a more localized, vertically integrated supply chain within the United States to serve clients and strengthen critical energy infrastructure.

Once fully operational, the facility is expected to achieve an annual production capacity exceeding 6 gigawatts, creating over 1,200 skilled technical jobs in southern Indiana and representing nearly US$1 billion in local investment. Company President Rusty Schmit stated the plant will produce next-generation HJT solar cells, supporting domestic manufacturing and ultimately enhancing grid reliability. Canadian Solar CEO Colin Parkin emphasised that HJT technology is key for next-generation high-efficiency modules, and this facility demonstrates the company's commitment to scaling advanced technology in the US.

The first phase of the plant, with a nameplate capacity of 2.1 gigawatts, began trial production in April and is scheduled to enter commercial operation in July. The company anticipates ramping phase one to full capacity over the coming months and plans to initiate a second phase expansion before the end of the year. This launch marks a critical step in Canadian Solar's efforts to revitalise its US operations and strengthen domestic manufacturing and supply chain resilience.
