Glencore's Trading Division Posts Massive Profits as War Drives Commodity Markets to Record Highs

Glencore has announced that its trading desk generated approximately $3.3 billion in profit during the first half of the year, positioning 2024 as potentially the company's most successful year ever. This performance highlights the enormous windfalls reaped by commodity traders following the surge in energy prices driven by the Iran conflict.

Based on the first-half results, the company is already nearing the upper end of its annual earnings target range of $3.5 billion. The trading business earned $2.9 billion last year. At the current pace, Glencore is on track to surpass the record $6.4 billion it achieved in 2022. However, the company has not updated its full-year earnings guidance.

The turmoil in energy markets sparked by the Middle East conflict has proven highly profitable for commodity trading firms. At the same time, factors ranging from the AI boom to trade tariffs have pushed metal prices higher. Glencore stated earlier this year that it had significantly outperformed its annual targets, but the exact magnitude of its trading profits remained unknown to the public until the company released its latest data today.

The major trader of metals and energy has not disclosed the specific sources of its profits, but it will provide more details when it publishes its first-half results next week.
