On March 12, the 2026 Hydrogen Energy Industry Conference and the Sichuan Province Hydrogen Industry Chain Supply-Demand Matchmaking Event were held in Chengdu. During the event, the Sichuan Provincial Department of Economy and Information Technology released ten major hydrogen energy application scenarios. The announced scenarios cover mature fields with existing foundations, such as hydrogen transportation and hydrogen industry, as well as forward-looking areas unique to Sichuan, including multi-energy supply systems for plateau regions and integrated hydrogen-ammonia-methanol production. The initiative also expands into future sectors like hydrogen-powered rail transit and hydrogen-powered drones, encompassing multiple dimensions such as integrated energy systems and multi-energy coordination.

"These ten scenarios represent ten major opportunities," stated a relevant official from the Department of Economy and Information Technology. Sichuan plans to transform these application scenarios into an "opportunity list," opening specific engineering projects and market demands to attract companies across the industrial chain to establish operations locally. The goal is to achieve "used in Sichuan" and subsequently "made in Sichuan."

Sichuan has already established a full industrial chain layout covering production, storage, transportation, refueling, and application. It has formed an innovation-driven development pattern centered around Chengdu, Panzhihua, and Deyang, with coordinated development across multiple regions. The province has nurtured leading enterprises such as Dongfang Electric Corporation and Houpu Clean Energy Group Co., Ltd., and gathered over 100 companies and research institutions from the upstream and downstream segments of the industry chain. Products like hydrogen refueling equipment and hydrogen storage cylinders hold a market share exceeding 30%, demonstrating significant competitive advantages in key areas such as water electrolysis hydrogen production equipment, high-pressure storage and transportation equipment, and core components of fuel cells.

The Ten Major Hydrogen Energy Application Scenarios in Sichuan are as follows:

1. Hydrogen-powered Long-distance Logistics: Leveraging expressways like Chengdu-Chongqing, Chengdu-Nanchong, and Chengdu-Ya'an, this scenario aims to connect green hydrogen corridors such as the "Chengdu-Chongqing Hydrogen Corridor," "Sichuan-Tibet Line," "Panzhihua-Xichang-Ya'an-Chengdu," "Chengdu-Deyang-Mianyang-Guangyuan," and "Chengdu-Deyang-Meishan-Ziyang," creating a dense hydrogen refueling network and establishing a major cross-regional logistics channel for hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks.

2. Hydrogen-powered City Buses: This scenario promotes the application of hydrogen fuel cell buses in cities including Chengdu, Deyang, and Guangyuan and their surrounding areas, building zero-carbon bus routes and leading the green transformation of urban transportation.

3. Hydrogen-powered Rail Transit: Combining the transition to new energy for railway diesel locomotives, this scenario involves piloting and promoting hydrogen-powered locomotives on existing railway lines or new suburban railway lines in areas like Panzhihua, Chengdu, and Neijiang, creating demonstration lines for hydrogen-powered rail transit.

4. Hydrogen-powered Two-wheelers: This scenario promotes the use of hydrogen-powered two-wheelers in areas like Chengdu, Guang'an, and Garzê. Over 10,000 units have already been deployed in the Chengdu market, effectively enriching green micro-mobility options in cities.

5. Integrated Hydrogen-Ammonia-Methanol Production: Utilizing abundant hydropower, wind, and solar resources in areas like Panzhihua and Liangshan, this scenario involves constructing integrated green hydrogen and hydrogen-ammonia-methanol projects, potentially expanding to downstream products like sustainable aviation fuel, aiming to build a future-oriented hub for green fuel and green hydrogen supply.

6. Hydrogen Metallurgy and Clean Hydrogen Substitution in Industry: Leveraging existing projects in sectors like steel, cement, and chemicals in areas including Panzhihua, Neijiang, and Chengdu, this scenario pilots hydrogen metallurgy and the substitution of clean, low-carbon hydrogen in industrial processes, exploring pathways for large-scale hydrogen consumption.

7. Pilot for Hydrogen-blended Natural Gas Combustion: Building on the industrial base in areas like Chengdu, Panzhihua, and Meishan and the province's natural gas pipeline network, this scenario promotes the application of hydrogen-blended combustion technology in industrial and residential sectors. It explores carbon reduction pathways through the synergistic coupling of hydrogen and natural gas, creating new scenarios for large-scale green hydrogen consumption.

8. Multi-energy Supply Systems for Plateau Regions: Utilizing wind and solar resources in high-altitude areas like Garzê and Ngawa, this scenario involves deploying multi-energy supply systems to meet essential needs such as oxygen, heat, and electricity in plateau regions, creating a model for hydrogen energy applications benefiting people's livelihoods.

9. Distributed Energy and Emergency Backup Power: This scenario involves piloting hydrogen-based combined heat and power systems and emergency backup power sources in industrial parks, residential communities, data centers, and communication base stations in areas including Chengdu, Panzhihua, and Ya'an.

10. Hydrogen-powered Drones: Leveraging Sichuan's complex and varied terrain and abundant agricultural and forestry scenarios, this scenario promotes the application of hydrogen-powered drones in fields like emergency rescue, logistics distribution, and agricultural plant protection, opening up new frontiers in the low-altitude economy.
