Despite the strong “familial” ties between Cici and Doubao, there are significant differences in functionality, technical architecture, and market positioning.

Functionally, Cici lacks the capabilities to generate music and video content, and users cannot share their creations directly on the platform. This indicates that Cici is relatively limited in its social features. This simplification makes Cici more akin to a lightweight AI tool focused on core needs rather than a complex creation community.

In technical architecture, Doubao primarily relies on ByteDance's self-developed Doubao large model, while Cici opts for a more open technological approach. Although it uses technologies from ByteDance's image editing tool PicPic and programming assistant Coze, for its core text generation capabilities, Cici has chosen to integrate advanced technologies from third parties.

Currently, there are hardly any visible branding marks of “ByteDance” within the app, but market sources have confirmed that ByteDance is the majority stakeholder.

In terms of marketing strategy, Cici employs a typical "ByteDance" approach. In Mexico, Cici launched over 400 ad sets in October, emphasizing user pain points like "completely free" and "solving math problems." This grassroots communication method lowers the barriers for user understanding and downloads.

Moreover, Cici leverages the ecosystem advantages of TikTok, a ByteDance subsidiary. Cici's official account on TikTok has garnered around 123,000 followers. Numerous creators also utilize hashtags like #ciciai to share sponsored content videos showcasing the app's features, triggering a ripple effect on social platforms.

Data from market research firm Sensor Tower confirms the effectiveness of this strategy, revealing that Cici's download numbers in markets like Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Mexico, and the UK have remained high over the last three months.

Cici’s overseas success is merely a microcosm of ByteDance's broader global AI strategy. A comprehensive examination reveals a clear trajectory of full-scale expansion.

ByteDance has invested heavily in AI infrastructure; according to market sources, the firm plans to invest over $12 billion in AI infrastructure in 2025, focusing on building its own computing centers and DPU chip development. Such investment establishes a solid foundation for expanding its global AI applications.

In terms of model technology, ByteDance's latest open-sourced Seed-OSS-36B model supports a native context length of 512K and introduces an innovative "controllable thinking budget" mechanism, enabling users to flexibly adjust the model's reasoning length to enhance efficiency.

Analyst Wu Lihui from Dongfang Securities indicated that ByteDance's AI application layout on the ToC side is extensive, with the chatbot Doubao possibly being the largest AI Native application in China. ByteDance has launched products across various AI application sectors like chatbots, education, image and video processing, and emotional companionship, with corresponding products in both overseas and domestic markets, developed for both app and web platforms. This comprehensive layout and traffic advantage allow ByteDance’s AI products to swiftly expand user coverage.

Additionally, ByteDance's AI has also achieved relatively high penetration in the enterprise sector. Apart from foundational technology and software, ByteDance has introduced AI headphones and other products in the hardware realm. While it has denied plans for an AI phone, the speculation reveals ByteDance’s ambitions in AI hardware.

Overall, ByteDance's AI presence is extending both in depth and breadth, showcasing a trend towards a robust open ecosystem.
