Fresenius Medical Care has recently announced the launch of the BEACON-US research study, designed to systematically collect real-world data on the efficacy and safety of high-volume hemodiafiltration therapy for dialysis patients in the United States. This project supports the company's ongoing efforts to promote high-volume hemodiafiltration therapy in the American market.

This therapy adds a convective clearance mechanism to traditional hemodialysis, enabling a more comprehensive removal of accumulated metabolic waste from the blood. The medical community typically defines high-volume hemodiafiltration as achieving a convective volume of 23 liters or more per treatment session. Early observations from the BEACON-US program align with findings from several previous international studies.

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, known as CONVINCE, showed that subjects receiving high-volume hemodiafiltration had a 23% lower risk of all-cause mortality compared to those receiving traditional high-flux hemodialysis. Additional real-world data also indicate an association between this therapy and reduced hospitalization rates and improved patient survival outcomes.

Dr. Charles Hugh-Jones, Global Chief Medical Officer of Fresenius Medical Care, stated that early results of high-volume hemodiafiltration in the U.S. are encouraging, with many patients reporting feeling better both during and after treatment. For example, the incidence of muscle cramps has decreased by 40%. The company's accompanying AutoSub technology has helped achieve the target convective volume in over 70% of treatments.

Ongoing data collection in the United States suggests that high-volume hemodiafiltration can effectively improve the rate of achieving adequate dialysis, increase convective clearance volume, and reduce water consumption, all without prolonging treatment time. This therapy is administered in the U.S. using Fresenius Medical Care's 5008X CAREsystem device. High-volume hemodiafiltration is already utilized in more than 90 countries worldwide, backed by nearly two decades of clinical experience.
