NVIDIA's co-founder and chief executive, Jensen Huang, has identified cybersecurity as the next major growth area for artificial intelligence, predicting that the advancement of AI will fundamentally disrupt the industry dedicated to protecting computer systems. Speaking to attendees at a Goldman Sachs technology conference in San Francisco on Thursday, Huang stated, "Cybersecurity is highly likely to become the next major application for AI."
Huang pointed out that AI's ability to automate computer programming is already impacting the cybersecurity sector, as the speed at which code is exploited increases, demanding equally rapid fixes. "What better way to create demand than to cause problems?" he asked the audience. "Who wouldn't want their own products to drive their market into a frenzy, with customers lining up for more? Of course, there are both responsible and less desirable ways to approach this."
His remarks to investors come on the heels of a major long-term forecast from the company last month, which reinforced Wall Street's expectations that massive spending on AI data centers will continue, allowing NVIDIA to benefit from these investments. Concurrently, the company's ongoing series of transactions continues to fuel speculation that these deals are distorting the AI technology market.
Huang dismissed concerns that some of these transactions might be of a circular nature, emphasizing the company's ability to discern the fundamental needs its customers are trying to satisfy. "This isn't a circular situation because we invest a small amount, and a significant amount of capital flows back," he stated. "People are beginning to realize that the places I invest are usually not bad investments, because I am a well-informed investor. I am not taking on risk."
Huang elaborated that he requires a high degree of certainty before deploying company funds into any venture. He noted that NVIDIA must first see that customers are already queuing up before it will consider a potential investment target.
