BNY Mellon Warns of Potential Currency Weakness in Asia-Pacific Due to Oil Price Surge

Bank of New York Mellon stated that due to rising oil prices linked to conflict in Iran, currencies in Asia-Pacific countries may face downward pressure, particularly those of net oil importers. Wee Khoon Chong, Senior Market Strategist for Asia-Pacific at the bank, indicated that alongside a strengthening U.S. dollar, pressure from foreign capital outflows could also weigh on regional currencies. Increasing inflationary pressures may further delay the Federal Reserve's potential easing path. This, combined with safe-haven demand, could support the U.S. dollar in the near term.
