Argentina's government has announced plans to pursue criminal legal action against several companies involved in oil exploration and extraction activities off the coast of the disputed Falkland Islands. The move, revealed in a statement from President Javier Milei's office, targets firms that hold British-issued licenses for hydrocarbon operations in the North Falkland Basin, which Argentina considers a violation of its national laws.

Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno will spearhead the prosecution, supported by fiscal prosecutor Sebastián Amerio, under direct orders from the presidential administration. The defendants named in the case include Navitas Petroleum Development and Production Ltd, Navitas Petroleum Atlantic Ltd, Navitas Petroleum Limited Partnership, JHI Associates Inc, and Atlantic Eco Oil and Gas Ltd. The legal action also extends to shareholders, directors, managers, officers, and representatives of Navitas Petroleum Limited Partnership and Atlantic Eco Oil and Gas Ltd.

Buenos Aires frames this litigation as a protective measure designed to safeguard its natural resources and bolster its sovereignty claim over the islands, which it refers to as the Malvinas. In a parallel move, President Milei has instructed Economy Minister Luis Caputo to prioritize funding for naval base construction in the region within the 2027 budget proposal, signaling a broader strategy to strengthen Argentina's presence and claims in the South Atlantic.
