On April 14, 2026, the Nanyang Intermediate People's Court in Henan Province publicly announced the first-instance verdict in the bribery case of Liu Weidong, former member of the leading Party members group and vice president of China Ordnance Equipment Group. The defendant, Liu Weidong, was sentenced to 13 years in prison for accepting bribes and fined 4 million yuan. All illicit assets obtained from his crimes and any accrued interest were confiscated and turned over to the state treasury.
The court found that between 1999 and 2025, Liu Weidong leveraged his positions—including as general manager of Xiangfan Dongfeng Auto Electric Co., head of the cooperative supporting department at Dongfeng Motor Corporation's truck company, member of the Party committee and general manager of Dongfeng Peugeot-Citroën Automobile, standing committee member of the Party committee and vice president of Dongfeng Motor Group, general manager of the passenger vehicle company under Dongfeng Motor Group, member of the Party leadership group and vice president of China Ordnance Equipment Group, and chairman of China Changan Automobile Group—to provide assistance to certain entities and individuals in matters such as business operations and promotions. In return, he accepted money and property equivalent to more than 41.39 million yuan.
The Nanyang Intermediate People's Court determined that Liu’s actions constituted the crime of bribery, involving an especially large amount, and warranted punishment according to law. However, considering that he truthfully confessed after being brought to justice, disclosed certain bribery facts not previously known to investigators, expressed remorse, and actively returned illicit gains—with all bribes and proceeds recovered—the court ruled for a lenient sentence.
The case was publicly heard on January 16, 2026. During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence, which was cross-examined by Liu and his defense counsel. Both sides fully expressed their views under the court’s supervision, and Liu made a final statement admitting guilt and showing repentance. More than 30 individuals, including NPC deputies, CPPCC members, and members of the public, observed the proceedings.
