Republican Support Drops to 37% vs Democrats' 44% Ahead of Midterms, Raising Concerns; Trump Warns of Impeachment if Defeated as Musk Steps In to Assist

A recent poll released on the 14th indicates a seven-point deficit in support for the Republican Party compared to the Democrats, casting a shadow over the upcoming midterm elections. The survey, conducted jointly by Reuters and Ipsos over four days with 1,143 U.S. adults, found that 44% of respondents would back Democratic congressional candidates if the elections were held immediately, while 37% favored Republican counterparts—the widest gap in this poll series since January 2025.

On contentious issues, 91% of Democratic voters oppose ongoing projects like the White House banquet hall, whereas only 25% of Republican voters share that opposition. Additionally, two-thirds of respondents feel these initiatives should not be prioritized amid broader government affairs.

President Donald Trump took to social media on September 11, making a bold pledge: if Republicans retain control of Congress in the November midterms, every American adult will receive $5,000. In his post, Trump wrote, "Because our nation is absorbing trillions of dollars in economic growth, investment, and pure success, we will hand out $5,000 'Trump Dividends' to all American adults. The 'dumb Democrats' are criticizing this, hoping it fails—but it will happen. Vote Republican—Make America Great Again!"

During a Dallas rally on the evening of September 10, Trump led supporters in a mock oath, urging them to "cheat like Democrats" in the early November elections, regardless of voter registration status, adding with a jest that non-voters would "go to hell." Earlier, at a South Carolina campaign event, Trump warned that if Republicans lose the midterms, he could face impeachment.

Billionaire Elon Musk has also entered the fray. Federal Election Commission (FEC) disclosures reveal that Musk's super PAC, America PAC, has already poured over $800,000 into midterm races, focusing primarily on key Republican Senate battlegrounds with some coverage of competitive House districts.

According to reports citing the New York Times, Musk's pro-Trump group, America PAC, plans to spend $120 million to mobilize Republican voters for the November congressional elections. Insiders suggest the Tesla and SpaceX founder could inject hundreds of millions, potentially ranging from $100 million to $200 million to support Republicans, though the final figure may shift.

"This is a massive influx that could significantly alter dynamics in certain races nationwide," noted Costas Panagopoulos, a distinguished political science professor at Northeastern University. "Money doesn't decide elections outright, but heavy spending forces opponents to increase outlays and creates an insurmountable imbalance in messaging."

Analysis of FEC year-end filings shows that Musk funneled most of his 2024 contributions through America PAC, a super PAC he funded to aid Trump's White House bid. Federal financial documents indicate that since January 1, 2025, America PAC has spent $52.3 million, with the committee raising $50.3 million this cycle—nearly $50 million of that directly from Musk.
