AMD Ryzen 9000G APU Set to Launch Soon, But Performance May Disappoint

Deep News
2025/10/21

On October 21, AMD's APU products have long been favored for their robust performance and exceptional cost-effectiveness. However, it seems AMD is increasingly indifferent to these offerings, especially given the low profit margins. After the Ryzen 9000 series has been out for a while, the Ryzen 9000G is finally on its way, but its specifications and performance may leave some users disappointed.

Recent updates sent to motherboard manufacturers include the microcode AGESA 1.2.7.0, which mentions Krackan Point and Krackan Point 2—likely references to the Ryzen 9000G series, or at least a portion of it. The Krackan Point series refers to the low-end mobile Ryzen AI 7/5 300 series, comprising models like Ryzen AI 7 350 and Ryzen AI 5 340/330 (the China-specific models have an additional H suffix). The Krackan Point can feature up to 8 cores with 16 threads, 24MB of cache, a boost frequency of 5.0GHz, 8 RDNA3.5 GPU cores, and a maximum thermal design power (TDP) of 54W. If released for desktops, it is unlikely to be named higher than the Ryzen 7 9700G, and the power consumption would likely be increased to 65W with slightly higher frequencies.

Previously, it was believed that the Ryzen 9000G series would be based on the mainstream mobile Strix Point, which includes the Ryzen AI 9 300 series with up to 12 cores, 24 threads, 36MB of cache, 5.1GHz boost frequency, and 16 GPU cores, also with a TDP of up to 54W. However, so far, there have been no clear indications that the Strix Point will be adapted for desktops. This can be understood, as the Strix Point series and its offshoots, such as the Ryzen Z2 series, are proving very popular in laptops, mini PCs, and handheld devices, and their prices have doubled compared to previous generations. Therefore, the priority seems to be much higher, and it might not be feasible to allocate production capacity for desktop models. We hope for future updates on this front.
