According to sources familiar with the matter, veteran investment banker Samuel Thong, who recently departed from Goldman Sachs, is expected to join UBS Group in October as Chairman of its Asia Healthcare Investment Banking business.
Dr. Thong has spent approximately 30 years specializing in healthcare investment banking, holding both a medical degree and an MBA from the University of Chicago. He initially joined Morgan Stanley to lead healthcare investment banking across Asia before moving to Bank of America Merrill Lynch, where he continued his focus in the sector.
In 2019, Thong transitioned from Morgan Stanley to Goldman Sachs, where he served as Chairman of the firm's Healthcare Investment Banking team for Asia ex-Japan and also held the role of Co-Head for that group. He left Goldman Sachs earlier this year.
His upcoming appointment at UBS marks a significant addition to the bank's regional healthcare franchise, as he brings deep industry knowledge and a long track record of advising on complex healthcare transactions across the Asia-Pacific region.
