AI Surge Drives Power Demand, Allianz Flags $4.8 Trillion Annual Investment Need for Global Electricity Systems

Allianz Investment has issued a report stating that artificial intelligence, electrification, industrial growth, and climate adaptation are ushering in a new era of electricity consumption. Global electricity demand growth has now outpaced economic output growth, with data centers being the largest driver of demand, while electric vehicles, heating and cooling systems, and manufacturing further amplify pressure on power supply.

The report calculates that, to meet electricity demand and achieve climate goals, the world will need to invest $4.8 trillion annually in the power sector over the next decade, based on the International Energy Agency's 2050 net-zero emissions scenario. Investment opportunities span power management semiconductors, flexible power sources, energy storage, grid equipment, critical raw materials, and next-generation energy technologies.

The report highlights that the core challenge lies in delivering large-scale, stable electricity at the right locations and at reasonable costs. Aging grids, transmission bottlenecks, the intermittency of renewable energy, equipment shortages, and lengthy approval processes could all constrain power supply. Major US cloud providers have begun developing off-grid power generation, while Europe needs to balance electricity affordability, energy security, and decarbonization targets.

Electricity is becoming a strategic economic resource, and a resilient power system will profoundly impact economic growth, inflation, industrial competitiveness, technological advancement, and energy security. Economies and companies that can guarantee stable power supply are poised for prosperity, while those facing persistent power bottlenecks risk falling behind.
