$286M in Liquidations as BTC Holds at $63.9K: Market Resilience Amidst Hawkish Divisions and Geopolitical Shocks

Cryptocurrency markets demonstrated significant resilience on Thursday, navigating the dual pressures of geopolitical shocks and a hawkish Federal Reserve stance. According to data from Woofun AI, a sudden escalation involving Iran firing ballistic missiles at U.S. forces, prompting President Donald Trump to pledge a "powerful strike," did not trigger a market crash in the crypto space. Instead, it highlighted the durability of asset prices in the face of unexpected events.

While the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) opted to hold interest rates steady, a notable hawkish signal emerged as three committee members voted in favor of raising rates. Woofun AI collated data from CoinGlass, revealing total liquidations of $286 million over the past 24 hours. Long positions accounted for $186 million of the liquidations, while short positions contributed $100 million. This volatile swing in both long and short directions forced the closure of leveraged positions, reshaping the market's microstructure.

Bitcoin (BTC) remained virtually unchanged, holding steady at $63,915. Ethereum showed a minimal decline of just 0.25% since midnight UTC. On Wednesday, global risk assets faced a severe test. Oil prices spiked following the Iranian attack, reversing the downward momentum seen on Monday, which in turn pressured U.S. equities. However, futures for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq indices showed slight gains, indicating a complex interplay among traditional assets.

Looking ahead, the market's focus shifts to corporate earnings. After the close of trading today, the release of quarterly results from Microsoft (MSFT.US) and Meta Platforms, Inc. (META.US) will serve as the next major catalyst. The performance of these tech giants could significantly influence market sentiment, determining the trajectory of risk assets against a backdrop of hawkish interest rate expectations and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.
