Global foldable smartphone shipments surged 14% year-over-year in Q3 2025, reaching a historic quarterly high, according to the latest market tracker by Counterpoint Research. The segment now accounts for 2.5% of total smartphone shipments, driven by deepening adoption in the premium market.

Book-style foldables led the expansion, fueled by Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 launch and Huawei’s sustained momentum with its Mate series. Clamshell models also performed well, benefiting from Samsung’s refreshed global lineup and strong demand for Motorola’s Razr 60 series.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z series dominated the quarter, with the Z Fold7 standing out for its slimmer profile, lighter weight, enhanced hinge durability, and minimized crease—boosting its premium appeal and driving above-expectation growth. Huawei’s Mate series maintained steady growth, while Honor and vivo contributed incremental gains through updated foldable offerings. Motorola excelled globally, expanding its user base via competitive pricing, robust channel partnerships, and high marks for product usability.

Foldables are projected to close 2025 with ~16% YoY growth, supported by premium users increasingly favoring larger screens for productivity and durability. The market is poised for accelerated expansion in 2026, driven by: - Improved durability and thinner/lighter designs - Optimized hinge and display structures - Richer AI-powered software experiences

Apple (AAPL.US), a key 2026 entrant, is expected to leverage its massive iPhone installed base to spur a new premium upgrade cycle in core markets. As competition intensifies, brands are doubling down on multi-form innovation to prepare for the next wave of adoption.

Notably, foldables are evolving beyond traditional book-style designs. Huawei’s early multi-fold prototypes demonstrated engineering feasibility, while Samsung’s newly unveiled tri-fold model signals a shift from concept to real-world testing—though initial volumes will be limited.

"Apple’s anticipated 2026 entry will reshape the competitive landscape," noted Associate Director Liz Lee. "Samsung’s tri-fold pilot focuses on validating durability, hinge architecture, and software optimization while gathering user feedback ahead of broader commercialization—solidifying its tech leadership ahead of the disruption."
