The Data Center Is Running Out of Copper — and Wall Street Just Found Out After the Bell

Two SEC filings dropped on the evening of August 11 that quietly reframed two of 2026's biggest trades: the AI buildout going optical, and the West's scramble for critical minerals. Here's what the filings actually said — and why they matter more than the day's index moves.

While the tape closed quietly, the real story was in the after-hours filings. Most of what hit SEC EDGAR was noise — debt raises, dilution, boilerplate. But two names stood out, and they sit on opposite ends of the same macro story: who controls the physical layer of the future.

1. Lumentum ($LITE): optics is eating the data center

Lumentum reported its fiscal Q4 and did about $1.01 billion in revenue with a non-GAAP gross margin north of 50%. Solid — but backward-looking. The number that matters is the guide.

For the next quarter, Lumentum told investors to expect:

  • Revenue of $1.225–1.275 billion — a step-change higher, not a drift

  • Non-GAAP operating margin of 39.5–40.5%

  • Non-GAAP EPS of $$4.05$$4.35

Management's framing was the tell. As AI compute scales in speed and bandwidth, data-center architects are hitting the limits of copper and switching to light for connectivity. Lumentum called out accelerating demand for 1.6T modules, ultra-high-power CPO (co-packaged optics) lasers, optical circuit switching (OCS), and an initial order for a new module line — the first signs that optics is penetrating in-rack connectivity, not just linking racks.

Why it matters: This is the picks-and-shovels layer of the AI trade. You don't have to pick the winning model or chip — you just have to believe the buildout keeps scaling. A guide-up of this size says the demand curve is bending up, not flattening.

2. U.S. Antimony ($UAMY): a weak quarter, a strong setup

On paper, the quarter looked soft. Revenue was **$$7.9 million**, *down* from$$10.5 million a year ago, and gross margin compressed to 7%. A screener would flag it red and move on.

The filing tells a different story underneath the headline:

  • Antimony pounds sold rose 26% (excluding defense/DLA volumes)

  • Zeolite revenue grew 110% year-over-year

  • **Working capital doubled to $$70 million** from$$35 million a quarter earlier

  • Management guided to a stronger second half as Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) shipments ramp

And the strategic line that anchors it: U.S. Antimony is the only fully integrated antimony producer outside China and Russia. Antimony is a critical mineral for defense applications, and Western supply security is now a policy priority, not a talking point.

Why it matters: This is a setup, not a print. The income statement is lagging; the balance sheet and the order book are leading. Weak quarter, strong story — the kind of divergence that separates a value trap from an early entry, depending on whether the H2 ramp actually lands.

3. The noise: debt and dilution

Everything else worth flagging fell into the "why the stock isn't the story" bucket:

  • O'Reilly ($$ORLY)** priced *$$1.6 billion in senior notes ($$700M at 4.80% due 2029,$$500M at 5.05% due 2031, $400M at 5.55% due 2037). This is debt, not equity dilution — neutral-to-normal for an investment-grade large cap funding buybacks and operations.

  • A broad wave of 424B5 offerings and unregistered share sales hit the tape. That's dilution. It's supply. For most of these names, the filing is the catalyst — a negative one.

The takeaway

Two filings, two themes, one thread: the fight over the physical layer of the AI economy — the optics that move the data, and the minerals that build the hardware.

  • $LITE is the "it's happening now" trade: demand is accelerating and the guide proves it.

  • $UAMY is the "it's coming" trade: the fundamentals lag, but the strategic position and defense demand are lining up.

  • Everything else was capital-structure housekeeping — important for holders, irrelevant as a catalyst.

The indices will tell you how yesterday felt. The filings tell you what's actually changing.
