At this community-based elderly care service center in Zhengzhou, more than 200 activities are organized each year. Director Gao says that in the nursing home, he collects only one sound—the laughter of the elderly. Many residents suffer from physical or cognitive impairments. To better connect with them, Director Gao has taken on various roles, including doctor, soldier, traffic police officer, spouse, and son-in-law. Through role-playing, he attempts to enter their world, finding unique ways to communicate with each resident and provide personalized care. Growing up, Gao Hongyao spent many holidays in nursing homes because his father was also engaged in the elderly care industry. This experience planted a seed in his heart. "Love flows both ways in a nursing home," he reflects. "The affection the elderly give me is no less than what I offer them. Every day, I too am being healed." Gao is striving to become more versatile by studying medical care, physical rehabilitation, music therapy, and psychological counseling. He has now become a "long-term care specialist." This emerging profession is increasingly becoming a new career choice for young people. More and more individuals born in the 1990s and 2000s are entering the front lines of elderly care with both expertise and compassion, using their youth to guard the beautiful twilight years of the elderly.
