According to an analysis of the global new energy vehicle (NEV) market for the first four months of 2026, global automobile sales totaled 30.96 million units, with NEV sales reaching 6.65 million units.
The share of NEVs in total vehicle sales for the period stood at 21.4%. This comprised a 14.7% share for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and a 6.7% share for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). Conventional hybrid vehicles (HEVs) achieved a 7.9% share, surpassing PHEVs to become a highlight of market growth.
China's share of the global new energy passenger vehicle market reached 61% during the period. The country held a 56% share of the global BEV market and a commanding 71% share of the global PHEV market.
Sales of NEVs outside of China totaled 2.63 million units from January to April, a 25% year-on-year increase, largely due to a significant recovery in the European market.
Chinese automakers have seen a substantial increase in their share of overseas NEV sales. This share rose to 15.8% in 2025 and jumped further to 23% in 2026.
**Global New Energy Vehicle Market Trends**
Worldwide automobile sales were 96.89 million units in 2025, with NEV sales reaching 22.89 million units. The share of all types of new energy vehicles, including HEVs, reached 30% of global sales in 2025, a 4-percentage-point increase from 2024.
Global NEV sales grew by 8% year-on-year to 6.65 million units in the first four months of 2026. Sales in April alone were 1.91 million units, up 12% year-on-year, though growth rates remain significantly below historical averages.
**Overseas New Energy Vehicle Market Trends**
NEV sales in markets outside China grew by 25% year-on-year to 2.63 million units in the January-April period, approaching the average growth rate of the previous two years, driven by a strong recovery in Europe and the U.S.
The overseas market share of Chinese-branded new energy passenger vehicles has increased significantly. It stood at 7.1% in 2023, rose to 9.6% in 2024, reached 15.8% in 2025, and surged to 23% in 2026.
Chinese brands hold over 80% of the NEV market in South America and 46% in Southeast Asia.
While the Chinese market experienced a temporary slowdown early this year, the U.S. NEV market has performed much weaker. U.S. NEV sales fell by 2% to 1.72 million units in 2025. In the first four months of 2026, U.S. NEV sales totaled 380,000 units, a 31% decline year-on-year.
In contrast, the European NEV market is showing strong growth. European NEV sales reached 3.86 million units in 2025, a 33% increase. Preliminary figures show sales of 360,000 units in April 2026, up 27% year-on-year, with cumulative sales of 1.45 million units for the period, a 30% increase.
**Global NEV Penetration Rates**
The global NEV penetration rate has risen rapidly, reaching 13.1% in 2022, 15.9% in 2023, 19.5% in 2024, and 23.6% in 2025. The cumulative penetration rate for 2026 stands at 21.5%.
Penetration rates vary greatly by region: Germany (31%), Norway (80%), the United Kingdom (33%), the United States (7%), and Japan (3%).
**Market Share by Manufacturer**
Among global automakers, China's BYD Company Limited leads in NEV sales, followed by Geely, which has risen rapidly. Tesla, Inc. has fallen to third place.
In the BEV segment, BYD Company Limited's global share has risen steadily, reaching around 18% in 2024-2025, though it dipped to 14.6% in the first four months of 2026. Tesla, Inc.'s share has declined from around 23% in 2021 to approximately 13.5% currently.
In the PHEV segment, BYD Company Limited is the most prominent player. Its global PHEV share rose from 15% in 2021 to 39% in 2024 and stood at 31% in the first four months of 2026.
**Conventional Hybrid Vehicle Market**
The conventional hybrid (HEV) market is dominated by Japanese and Korean automakers, with Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Hyundai collectively holding an 84% share in 2026.
China's share of the global HEV market has rebounded to 15.5% in 2026, while the U.S. market accounts for 29% of the global total.
