In 1999, an American educator teaching in China, known as "Sycamore," was deeply moved by the story of Yin Yuzhen, who had dedicated herself to planting trees in the desert. He raised $5,000 to support her sand-control efforts.
The following year, he made a grueling journey to the Mu Us Sandy Land in Wushen Banner, Inner Mongolia, to plant trees side by side with Yin Yuzhen.
In August 2026, Sycamore visited China once again, reuniting with Yin Yuzhen after years apart across the ocean. Over more than two decades, small acts of kindness have grown into over 50,000 thriving trees, transforming vast stretches of yellow sand into continuous oases.
The green promise made on the Mu Us Sandy Land also serves as a vivid symbol of the enduring grassroots friendship between the Chinese and American people.
