Maserati SUV Slashes Price to $35K in China, Now Competes with Xiaomi as Sales Plunge 70%

Once positioned as a rival to Porsche, Maserati is now offering its SUV at a steep discount of just 358,800 yuan ($35,000) in China—a price range comparable to Xiaomi's YU7 and other EV newcomers—as dealers resort to drastic price cuts to revive plummeting sales.

**Maserati’s EV Sees Drastic Price Cut** Dealers are advertising the all-electric Grecale Folgore SUV starting at 358,800 yuan (before options), a model equipped with CATL battery technology boasting a claimed range of 533 km (though real-world driving may yield around 400 km). The price includes exemption from purchase tax.

A sales consultant confirmed the pricing, noting that after adding optional features, the final cost would approximate 400,000 yuan. The electric version, while sharing design cues with its gasoline counterpart, offers more futuristic styling.

The dealer revealed strong demand: "Our store opened in October, and we’ve already sold half of the 70–80 discounted units available, attracting both local and out-of-town buyers."

**From Porsche Rival to Xiaomi Competitor** Originally priced at 898,800 yuan, the Grecale Folgore was positioned against the Porsche Macan EV. Post-discount, it now competes in the 300,000–400,000 yuan segment against Chinese EV brands like Xiaomi, NIO, Li Auto, and AITO.

The price cuts reflect Maserati’s sales collapse in China. After peaking at 14,400 units in 2017—when China became its largest global market (40% female buyers vs. 5% overseas)—sales nosedived from 2018 onward. In 2024, deliveries plunged over 70% to just 1,209 units. January–September 2025 saw a further 3% drop to 1,023 imports.

The slump has strained finances. In October 2024, then-Stellantis NV CEO Carlos Tavares admitted Maserati was "in the red," fueling recurring but denied rumors of a potential sale by its parent company.
