Sierra Metals Inc. has suspended its operations at its mine in Peru after locals blocked access to the site.

The precious and base metals producer said Thursday that the only activities at the Yauricocha mine are for safety and maintenance, while production has been suspended for the time being.

Sierra Metals didn't specify why the local residents of the nearby town of Alis have blocked access, but said it has sent representatives from the company to discuss matters with members of the group.

The company said it doesn't know when the dispute will be resolved, nor how long the subsequent potential delay to restarting production there would take, and has suspended its production and financial guidance for the year as a result.

The mine is operated by its subsidiary, Sociedad Minera Corona.
