Corporate crusader Jennifer Westacott has called time on her tenure as chief executive officer of the Business Council of Australia, and will step down in the next 12 to 18 months.

After agreeing late last year to implement a succession strategy, the BCA has enlisted a recruitment agency to find a replacement for Ms Westacott who has been at the helm of the organisation since 2011.

Ms Westacott, who has lobbied tirelessly over the years for lower company tax rates, industrial relations changes and measures to drive productivity, has told colleagues she wants to move on before the next election.

The BCA confirmed the move after several sources contacted The Australian Financial Review to report candidates from what is believed to be a “long short list” were being sounded out.

“The board is working in partnership with Jennifer to plan for her succession, and we’ve engaged an external party to help us do that,” BCA president Tim Reed said.

“This is critical work needed to future-proof the organisation as we head into our 40th year.

“The Business Council works hard every day to make Australia a more prosperous, more successful nation. We are very fortunate to have such a capable leader who delivers this for members and our community with high-energy and high impact, but both Jennifer and the board agree that we need to be ready for change, and therefore we’ve initiated a formal process.

Ms Westacott said:

“The Business Council’s role fighting for the policies that keep Australia strong with a vibrant and successful business sector has never been more important, after 12 years leading the BCA I’ve begun working with Tim and the board to plan for the future.

“Safeguarding our critical role means working to get leadership and succession plans in place and getting the secretariat structure right to ensure the organisation continues to have an outsized impact on the national debate.”
