Meiji to Build New Plant in Kanagawa, Reorganize Production Structure

Meiji Holdings (TYO:2269), a Japanese food and pharmaceutical company, plans to build a new plant in Atsugi, Kanagawa, as part of a reorganization of its production structure, according to a Friday filing on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

The restructuring aims to improve profitability and operational efficiency within its dairy business, especially in yogurt production.

The new facility will integrate advanced production technologies to extend product use-by dates, reduce fixed costs, and optimize Meiji's supply-demand system.

The plant will also focus on sustainability by using renewable energy sources such as solar panels and energy-efficient heat pumps, contributing to a carbon-free, zero-emission facility.

Meiji will cease production at its current Kanagawa, Tohoku, and Toda plants, with their operations consolidated into the new Atsugi plant and other existing sites. The estimated cost of the new plant is nearly 40 billion yen, with expected annual production valued at 35 billion yen.

Operations at the new Kanagawa plant are slated to begin in March 2027.
