Flutter Entertainment's (FLUT) FanDuel is facing a civil suit alleging that the company "exploited" Amit Patel's gambling addiction disorder for its benefit, according to the court complaint on Tuesday.

Patel is demanding $250 million in compensatory and punitive damages, according to the court filing.

Defendants in the case also include Fox Corp. (FOX) and Boyd Gaming (BYD), which own stakes in FanDuel.

Patel gambled over $20 million with the defendants on daily fantasy sports from late 2019 to early 2023. The defendants were allegedly aware that the plaintiff was an addicted gambler, as they tracked his large deposits, betting amounts, and frequent gambling activity, according to the filing.

"Defendants preyed on [the] plaintiff by using its information about his addiction to target him for enticements including well over a million dollars in FanDuel credits and lavish gifts to ensure that he deposits money and gambles in amounts and frequencies that only an addict could ever gamble," the complaint said.

The complaint added that Patel's judgment was seriously impaired by his gambling addiction when he started using his employer's credit card to deposit money for gambling.

"FanDuel does not comment on matters of pending litigation," the company told MT Newswires. Flutter Entertainment, Fox, and Boyd Gaming did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' requests for comment.
