STOCKHOLM--Swedish steelmaker SSAB will deliver steel produced without the use of fossil fuels to Amazon Web Services for use in a new data center being built in Sweden.

Amazon Web Services is currently building three new data centers in Sweden. To minimize carbon emissions, it is mainly using steel made from recycled scrap, which has lower carbon emissions than steel made in blast furnaces.

However, since scrap is a limited resource, the company will collaborate with SSAB and its subsidiary Ruukki to secure pilot deliveries of virgin steel made without fossil fuels.

Ruukki will supply roof and wall structures for the buildings.

SSAB's so-called fossil-free steel replaces the coking coal traditionally used for iron ore-based steelmaking with electricity from renewable sources and hydrogen.

Financial terms weren't disclosed.
