Those who invested in Verra Mobility (NASDAQ:VRRM) five years ago are up 67%

While Verra Mobility Corporation (NASDAQ:VRRM) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn't had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 12% in the last quarter. But at least the stock is up over the last five years. Unfortunately its return of 67% is below the market return of 108%.

Now it's worth having a look at the company's fundamentals too, because that will help us determine if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the last half decade, Verra Mobility became profitable. That's generally thought to be a genuine positive, so investors may expect to see an increasing share price. Since the company was unprofitable five years ago, but not three years ago, it's worth taking a look at the returns in the last three years, too. We can see that the Verra Mobility share price is up 59% in the last three years. Meanwhile, EPS is up 129% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 17% average annual increase in the share price over the same three years. So you might conclude the market is a little more cautious about the stock, these days.

It is of course excellent to see how Verra Mobility has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. You can see how its balance sheet has strengthened (or weakened) over time in this free interactive graphic.

A Different Perspective

Verra Mobility provided a TSR of 13% over the last twelve months. But that return falls short of the market. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 11% per year over five year. It is possible that returns will improve along with the business fundamentals. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Verra Mobility better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example - Verra Mobility has 2 warning signs (and 1 which shouldn't be ignored) we think you should know about.
