We're Keeping An Eye On Anghami's (NASDAQ:ANGH) Cash Burn Rate

Even when a business is losing money, it's possible for shareholders to make money if they buy a good business at the right price. For example, although Amazon.com made losses for many years after listing, if you had bought and held the shares since 1999, you would have made a fortune. But while the successes are well known, investors should not ignore the very many unprofitable companies that simply burn through all their cash and collapse.

Given this risk, we thought we'd take a look at whether Anghami (NASDAQ:ANGH) shareholders should be worried about its cash burn. In this article, we define cash burn as its annual (negative) free cash flow, which is the amount of money a company spends each year to fund its growth. First, we'll determine its cash runway by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves.

When Might Anghami Run Out Of Money?

A company's cash runway is calculated by dividing its cash hoard by its cash burn. Anghami has such a small amount of debt that we'll set it aside, and focus on the US$27m in cash it held at June 2024. Importantly, its cash burn was US$25m over the trailing twelve months. Therefore, from June 2024 it had roughly 13 months of cash runway. That's not too bad, but it's fair to say the end of the cash runway is in sight, unless cash burn reduces drastically. Depicted below, you can see how its cash holdings have changed over time.

Is Anghami's Revenue Growing?

We're hesitant to extrapolate on the recent trend to assess its cash burn, because Anghami actually had positive free cash flow last year, so operating revenue growth is probably our best bet to measure, right now. Although it's hardly brilliant growth, it's good to see the company grew revenue by 13% in the last year. Of course, we've only taken a quick look at the stock's growth metrics, here. Can Anghami Raise More Cash Easily?

While Anghami is showing solid revenue growth, it's still worth considering how easily it could raise more cash, even just to fuel faster growth. Issuing new shares, or taking on debt, are the most common ways for a listed company to raise more money for its business. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).

Anghami's cash burn of US$25m is about 48% of its US$53m market capitalisation. From this perspective, it seems that the company spent a huge amount relative to its market value, and we'd be very wary of a painful capital raising.

How Risky Is Anghami's Cash Burn Situation?
