Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Fitbit unit has agreed to pay a $12.25 million fine to resolve charges by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission that it failed to properly report a defect in its Ionic smartwatches that posed an unreasonable risk of injury for consumers.

The CPSC and Fitbit jointly announced a recall of Ionic smartwatches in March 2022 after the company received at least 115 reports of batteries overheating, with 78 reports of burn injuries in the US, the agency said.

A Fitbit spokesperson told MT Newswires in an emailed statement that "customer safety continues to be our top priority and we're pleased to resolve this matter with the CPSC stemming from the 2022 voluntary recall of Fitbit Ionic."
