Greif (GEF) said Wednesday that it will permanently close its containerboard and uncoated recycled paperboard mill in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

The industrial packaging company also said it will permanently close production of its Number 1 Paperboard Machine in Austell, Georgia. Greif said the moves will impact approximately 140 positions.

The company said that closing its Fitchburg mill is a result of high operating costs and the need for significant capital investment. It said ceasing production of its Number 1 Paperboard Machine is due to increased cost and declining demand for furniture, books, and binders.

Greif also said the cutbacks will reduce the containerboard capacity of its mill network by 100,000 tons, and uncoated recycled paperboard capacity by 90,000 tons.
