TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A worker at PT Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel (PT ITSS), identified by the initials EJ, died in a work accident on Wednesday evening, February 5, 2025. This tragic incident marks another in a series of workplace accidents at the company, raising serious concerns about its Safety and Health Work (K3) system.
Fadil, the Chair of the Work Unit Committee (PUK) of the Morowali Industrial Workers Union (SPIM) at ITSS, accused the company management of negligence in implementing K3 protocols. He demanded that PT ITSS leadership be held accountable for the incident.
"We demand that the management of PT ITSS be brought to trial and imprisoned for the incident that claimed the lives of workers at the steel production department," Fadil stated in an official statement on Thursday, February 6, 2025.
Information gathered indicates that the accident occurred at approximately 9:00 p.m. local time in the Steel Production Department. The victim was unrolling a steel strip that was misaligned, resulting in him being pinned and fatally injured at the scene. At the time of the accident, the victim was working without supervision.
The recurring work accidents at PT ITSS have drawn the attention of labor unions. Komang Jordi Segara, the Daily Chairperson of SPIM, affiliated with the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KPBI), described the company's K3 system as inhumane.
"The K3 system within PT ITSS is very inhumane, as it continues to claim the lives of workers, even amid the ongoing National K3 Month," he added.
In addition to allegations of a flawed K3 system, PT ITSS management is also accused of union busting. Komang stated that the company had unilaterally terminated the employment of Anwar, the Treasurer of the PUK SPIM PT ITSS.
