HP inked a deal to buy certain artificial-intelligence assets from Humane for $116 million.

The computer and printer maker said Tuesday it will buy Humane's AI-powered platform Cosmos. The deal additionally includes more than 300 of Humane's patents and patent applications, as well as a group of engineers that would form HP's new AI-innovation lab.

Dubbed HP IQ, the AI lab will focus on building an intelligent ecosystem across HP's products and services for the future of work, the Palo Alto, Calif., company said.

"This investment will rapidly accelerate our ability to develop a new generation of devices that seamlessly orchestrate AI requests both locally and in the cloud," HP's President of Technology and Innovation Tuan Tran said.

The deal is expected to close at the end of the month.

Founded in 2018, Humane is a San Francisco company that provides professional, scientific and technical services.
